FAQs
Image conversion can be tricky.
As of 2025, WebP remains the more widely supported format across browsers and Google services. If you’re planning to use platforms like Google Merchant Center, note that AVIF is still not supported, making WebP the safer choice for compatibility.
That said, AVIF offers better compression than WebP, often producing smaller file sizes with similar or better image quality. However, AVIF images take longer to generate, which can be a drawback during the image processing phase. Fortunately, this is typically a one-time cost if you’re not frequently updating images.
For purely informational websites, where compatibility with external services like Google Merchant Center isn’t critical, AVIF can be a solid choice due to its superior compression.
Currently, our plugin does not support converting WebP images to AVIF.
For the best image quality, it’s always recommended to convert from the original source files (JPEG or PNG) directly to WebP or AVIF.
If you’ve already used Microbite Image Converter Pro to convert your images to WebP and have backups enabled, follow these steps to convert them to AVIF:
- Restore Original Images
Use the backup feature to revert your images back to their original JPEG or PNG format. - Update the Database (Important!)
Perform a bulk search and replace in your database to change image URLs back to their original formats (e.g.,.webp
→.jpg
or.png
). - Convert to AVIF
Run the bulk converter to create AVIF versions from the original images. - Update the Database Again
Perform another bulk search and replace to change the URLs in your site’s database from.jpg
or.png
to.avif
.
This ensures maximum quality and compatibility when switching formats.
No — the plugin automatically converts images during upload to save processing time, which replaces the original immediately.
If you want to compare uploaded images before and after conversion, you’ll need to disable the “Convert Images on Upload” option. Then, upload the image and use the Existing Image Conversion feature to process it manually. This allows you to keep the original for comparison.
To use the recommended image conversion settings, go to the plugin menu and click Reset Defaults > Restore Default Settings.
This will apply the optimal settings for most use cases.
We recommend UpdraftPlus. It offers reliable backup and restore functionality, supports cloud storage options, and is widely trusted within the WordPress community.
This means there is not enough memory, try to increase your available memory. Or use smaller image files.
